Daylighting and Loading Zones

What is it?

Preserving clear lines of sight around intersections so that drivers, pedestrians, and people on bikes can see each other and keep themselves and each other safe.

Why here?

People regularly park their cars in the crosswalks - hiding oncoming cars and crossing pedestrians and causing pedestrians to have to enter travel lanes to cross the street.

Why now?

Recent deaths would all likely have been prevented by daylighting.

Precedent

It is New York State Law to require daylighting 20 feet from all intersections. NYC has opted out of this law, though there is a growing list of community boards who are demanding universal daylighting to be implemented.

Midblock Crosswalks and Narrowing

What is it?

Clear and safe crossings into McGolrick Park at park entrances. And mid block hugging will calm traffic and increase pedestrian visibility.

Why here?

The design of McGolrick Park drives neighbors to exit and enter at these points, yet the streets are not built to safely accommodate them.

Why now?

This has been a request for years.

Precedent

For every one foot removed from crossing a street, the crossing becomes one percent safer. These midblock extensions have been implemented at McCarren and Cooper Park, and made crossings much safer.
